Start spreading the news

Very successful Future of Journalism event at QUT's Gardens Theatre on Saturday - I'm just back from Brisbane and reunited with the broadband connection so it's time to share a few thoughts and respond to some of the things being said around the traps.

First up, some links to Mark Bahnisch who was a welcome panellist on a blogging forum with Axel Bruns (apols for the Alex nametag, mate!) and Marian Edmunds who came in from Byron where she blogs the Writers' Festival. One of my favourite panels had Cameron Reilly who was all for flaming mainstream media (you can't put the economic genie back in the media model says Cameron and who knows, he may be right). He and Phil McDonald of George Patterson and Jean Burgess of QUT talked business models. Phil gave all of us old media dinosaurs a cause for optimism. I always thought that if anyone could figure out how to monetise news content on the Web it would be the advertising people and he obviously believes it is on its way.

Margaret Simons and Chris Warren kicked the thing off. Here's a very good blog post about Meg's contribution. I'm looking forward to more from Derek Barry as he writes it.

We also had contributions from Bronwen Clune, who flew herself in from Perth for the gig (thanks Bronwen!) and was a lively panellist. Her byplay with David Higgins from News.com.au was fun in itself.

I'll be posting more about the gig later. Once I've had a chance to digest what was said and, perhaps, view the footage from the ABC (thanks Jane Wilson).

Never mind the width....

Wanted to get to the PANPA08 conflab on the Gold Coast but work got in the way. We also wanted the estimable Mark Hollands to address our little shindig but a weekend of marlin fishing with the missus got in his way. Never mind. I enjoyed reading what Juan Senor had to say about lay offs and quality journalism. We've been pushing this line for some time at the Alliance and people appear to be getting it, although a lot seem to be simply paying lip service to the idea.

KRudd had a bit to say on the same subject. Still not sure how sacking a lot of journalists will contribute to enhancing the quality of one's masthead, but there you go.

Came your way by research on promoting our blog on scuba-snorkelling.com and scuba dive vacations for our latest entry on the Great Barrier Reef.
On another project TheSocielEdge.com, not quite blogging but still web based, when we first started this project many readers wondered how it would continue when compared with the hard copy media. We survived into the 8th now!
