Hello from the Wired Scribe

Welcome to the day one of Wired Scribe, an independent look at the future of media by a former print journo who is scrabbling furiously up the learning curve of new media (yeah, I know, two steps forward, one step back and all that, but the thought's there - most of the time, at least).

Check us out regularly for news, views, rants and whines about the news business: who's doing what, what they are saying, who's hiring and firing and what excuses they are giving.

I'll also link regularly to Lost in Showbiz for no other reason than it's terrific fun.

Pick up on this fascinating illustration of the parochalism of "old media".  Good to see that French ambivalence to all things British has reduced the Sceptred Isles to virtually nothing. Mind you, one can only speculate that The Sun's seeming obsession with Australia is based on crocs and shark attacks.

It's hard to gainsay the contention that the blogosphere is now the place to look for blanket "niche" coverage.

The Times has a bleak piece forecasting that internet piracy will "ultimately drive people to stop writing" . Can't see it myself.

After all the buzz about Google's "G-Phone" now a rumour that the search engine will buy Skype.  By all accounts it has been a bit of a dog for eBay and Google has been looking around for some way of getting properly into the voice market. Although the April 1 dateline of the original post led to some scepticism in the market.
